Beauty

Ode to Beauty: SPLaTT

A poem by Jesus Llorcio

Speaker: The poem is written in first person, so the author, Jesus Llorcio is the speaker

Purpose:The authors purpose in this poem was to record his feelings and emotions and beauty of the person he's thinking about.

Literary Devices: This poem uses simile, idiom, personification, and some alliteration.

Theme: One constant theme that remained in this poem was that "beauty was in the eye of the beholder". The author makes many claims about that persons beauty, but things the author writes are merely opinions of his, and we all know that opinions vary from one person to another. Thus, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Tone : The tone of the poem was very loving and admiring.

Characterization

Definition:

Direct Characterization is when the author literally explains the character's traits. On the other hand, Indirect Characterization is when we find out the character's traits through their actions or other characters talking about them

Alliteration

Example:

In The Fox Hunt, by Lensey Nakioma, we indirectly learn that Liang Fujin is a a dedicated and hardworking person because he tied his hair to a nail to prevent from falling asleep.

Definition:

The appearance of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

In the Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling, we find out that Harry is very brave through indirect characterization. His actions (facing Voldemort time and time again for example) show his courage.

Example:

In Ode To Beauty by Jesus James Llorico the narrator says"...longed to leave a life long kiss". The repetitive sound is "l".

Alliteration is often used in Where the Sidewalk Ends, a book full of poems by Shel Silverstein.

Verbal Irony

Definition:

A type of irony where the opposite of what was expected is revealed through a character's words

Example:

In The Fox Hunt, by Lensey Nakioma, Lee reveals that Andy is actually part fox. This was a very unexpected turn of events that was revealed through Lee saying ,"We foxes hunt our own kind".

Regina: Oh my God! I love your skirt, where did you get it?

Lea: It was my mom's in the '80s.

Regina: Vintage, so adorable.

Lea: Thanks. (Walks away)

Regina(to Cady): That is the ugliest effing skirt I have ever seen.

Idiom

Definition:

A group of words having a different meaning than their literal meaning. They are often used in everyday language.

Example:

In Ode To Beauty by Jesus James Llorico, the narrator says "My dreamy eyes have flown so free...", which actually means that he feels he cannot look anywhere but his lover. He is captivated by her beauty.

Flashback

"Break a leg" is an idiom that often used to wish someone luck if it has to do with acting. In Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer, Gigi uses it to wish her friend Neerja luck on her first performance.

Definition:

A scene in a work of literature set in a time before the current events of the story. It is often used for foreshadowing.

Example:

In The Fox Hunt by Lensey Namioka, Andy's mother tells him about his ancestor, Fujin Liang. This portion of the story is told in flashback.

In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss has a flashback: She remembers Peeta throwing her bread while she was starving. It was used to show us how they felt about each other.

Plot

Definition:

The main events of a piece of literature presented by the author to the reader/viewer.

Divergent by Veronica Roth follows a thrilling plotline set in a dystopian society.

Example:

Like in all good stories, The Fox Hunt by Lensey Namioka follows a plot line. Andy doesn't have many friends and when he meets a new girl, he finally has someone to study with for the PSAT. When his mom tells him about one of his ancestors, he finds a shocking relation with his own life.
