Film is a great example of both field and genre because it is a particular branch of study and is categorized into different type of films based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Examples for this genre are Action, Adventure, Comedy, Historical, Fantasy, Horror etc.
Image provides major affordances when communicating ideas, as we discussed earlier. With images, you can direct a person to see, think, or feel a certain way about what you are saying. From the subject of the image to its colors and arrangent, you can use these affordances to your advantage in manipulating a person to see what you want them to see, feel what you want them to feel, or to think in a way that they haven't thought before. Visual stimulus gives you a way to provoke certain reactions they you may not have been able to find the words to do before.
The affordances of video are very similar to image in that you can similarly manipulate a person to react the way you want them to. The main difference is that there is the additional affordance of audio. Like image, you can select audio pieces that will lead a person to a particular thought or emotion depending on your choices. Slow, sad music will result in a depressive feeling, but a recording of stand-up comedy can make you happy.
Alphabetic text provides us with the ultimate form of control and perhaps the most powerful affordances. You can go to the extremes of being in complete control of what your reader understands to allowing them to make their own assumptions. For instance, in a fiction story, you can be so detailed in your description of a character that your reader knows them like a close friend. Or you could give the reader enough to create in their own mind an even better character than you could have created for them. Either way, were they to lose that character, the closeness created in either extreme makes for an emotional experience and a great sense of loss. With this form, the major affordance is the amount of control you have and the lessened chances for human error. Therefore, when you take up alphabetic text as your means of communicating your idea, you arguably have the mightiest weapon of all.
"The pen is mightier than the sword."
~Edward Bulwer Lytton
A great example of arrangement would be this information graphic about paper vs. technology in college. There are many questions that can be said about this info graphic and why the creator deiced to do what they did. Like why does the info graphic have alphabetic text and images that are placed either left or right? Why did they decide to use those colors? Why did they decide to incorporate stars? etc.
Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them.
"Affordances refers to what one thing can do, or allow us to do, that other things can’t"
Facebook is an online social networking service. After registering to use the site, users can create a user profile, add other users as "friends", exchange messages, post status updates and photos, share videos and receive notifications when others update their profiles.
"Genre refers to a category or classification of something."
"A field is a group of people, the texts they write, and the things they do, in order to generate and circulate knowledge related to a particular idea or question."
"Arrangement refers to the deliberate placement of pieces of a project in time or in space."
A great example for this is the super bowl Oreo ad. During the super bowl in February 2013, the third quarter, power went out, and play stopped for almost 35 minutes. Oreo tweeted an ad with just picture of a cookie and the line "you can still dunk in the dark. The company seized the opportunity to get their brand out there. Clearly a kairotic moment.
Alphabetic text is everywhere. From ads on the street to books, videos, letters, and social networks. Alphabetic text only gets stronger and more developed by each decade and with the power of social media, alphabetic text is brought to and done by people in so many ways that it ever was before.
"Kairos refers to a qualitative sense of time, an intangible sense of opportunity."
Essentially, kairos is the part of your work that explains why what you're saying is important right now. To bring kairos into your work, find something that people currently care about that relates to your work and draw on that. If you relate your idea to something people find important, they will also find what you're saying important.
"Alphabetic text refers to the letters and words we use when we’re communicating in writing."
"Ethos refers to who other people think you are, based on what and how you write and speak."
"Circulation refers to what happens to a text once it has been produced."
Ethos is the person that you present to your audience and it should be handled with care. You can't have Curly, Larry, and Moe (The Three Stooges) explain a theory on dark matter because people won't take them seriously. Likewise, Stephen Hawking wouldn't be suited for storytelling because he would make the story boring. In short, your ethos is mainly determined by your language. Slang terms can make you a casual friend. Sophisticated terms can make you an authoritative professor. You can be a trustworthy or laughable just based on your language. Choose your ethos wisely and make sure you follow it through.
Circulation is, generally, the ability of your work to reach people. For instance, this presentation we're giving will most likely have poor circulation because it's purpose is mainly for this class. Fairytales, however, have great circulation because people find new ways to make them fresh and the stories live on.

When you communicate ideas using images, you are using visual aids to either show people what you are saying literally or to show them the feelings behind them. You can use them to manipulate the way a person sees or feels about your ideas. Image is a way to guide your audience towards the reaction you want them to have.

For my remix of American Gothic, The reason why I decide to do a parody was because as referenced in our textbook on (P.80) I wanted to“stress the comical and humorous aspects”of the American Gothic while incorporating Donald Trump to strengthen the affordances of pop culture in our society. I decided to put Trump in a suit with overalls while holding a Trident because I wanted to express how taboo and ironic this artwork really is by including as much detail and hidden messages to prove my point. When doing research on this phenomenon, I found out that there were no remixes of parodies of American Gothic using Donald Trump in any way. This means that my remix is an original idea and I can not be sued for copyright or any other legal issues of someone claiming that I took or didn't give credit to something because it was mine to begin with.
"Remix refers to both a product and a process; which involves the manipulation and rearrangement of "original" materials, modes, genres, and stories into something new.
The American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood at the Art Institute of Chicago. The painting shows a farmer standing beside a woman that has been interpreted to be either his wife or his daughter. American Gothic is often understood as an incisive criticism on the Midwestern character and quickly became one of America’s most famous paintings and is now widely parodied in American popular culture (The Art Institute of Chicago). There are millions of remixes that come from this painting and uses different mediums to create these remixes.
A great example of this is my (Jasmine) parody of the "American Gothic" by Grant Wood
