This tragedy happened in Lens, France. The Courrieres coal mine disaster was a natural disaster that killed 1,099 people. Date of event, March 10, 1906

the causes of the tragedy was a gas explosion. It is said that gas mixed with the coal dust from mining and seeped into the walls over night, while that was happening a fire was going down below that had started the night before. When the miners came to work the next day the lamps they use to see had an open flame and it ignited the as in the walls.

This affected over 1,000 families but killed 1,099 workers. The company that owned the mine didnt attempt to rescue anyone, but instead closed the mine. It also affected the community and shocked the nation.
