Currently in the Maldives, most people who are residents there are Indo-Aryans who speak the language of Dhivehi. Any citizens of the Maldives must be Muslim, otherwise you will not be able to obtain citizenship, vote, or hold public positions. Many people vacation at the Maldives for the beautiful resorts and beaches.

The British took responsibility for the Maldives' defense, and foreign relations. The British allowed the Maldivians to still run everything inside the islands which was run by the Sultan.

Maldives

The Maldives is a group of many

islands that are made up of many beaches and reefs. Various

resorts in which a lot of tourists visit.

The Maldives became a British protectorate on December 16, 1887.

The Maldives would have no British governor or representative. The Sultan remained head of state. The British would not interfere with the Maldives internal affairs.

The Maldives became a British protectorate after the British and Maldives made a treaty. The treaty offered that the British would not interfere them in any way. They would actually defend them. The Maldives weren't necessarily taken over, they were just controlled and defended by the British.

Freedom

The treaty was off after 77 years as a British protectorate. The Maldives gained independence on July 26, 1965. The British had built an air base on the islands before independence but the Maldivian government wanted to keep it.

The Maldives became a British protectorate simply because of their geography, and location. The British had already taken over the surrounding countries, so it would be very easy and safe to establish a naval base because of its location. The Maldives also benefited from this because they would get defense from Britain.
