Japan quit trading with the western world for some time and forced the Russians out of Northern Honshu.

Russia influenced Japan by trading with Ainu (non- humans live that live in Northern Honshu). Russia started gaining land from the Ainu.

Japan's response was extreme and it lead to harmful effects on their political and economical standpoint with other nations.

The sciences of the west had a huge influence on Japans technology.

These technologies included surgery, astronomy, and better boats.

Japan accepted western influence but still filtered down contact to the dutch. They did this because the dutch did not try to convert them to Christianity.

Japan learned many new languages from Dutch texts. This lead to great enlightenment in the sciences.

The U.S.A wanted Japan to help american shipwrecked sailors so they wanted a treaty. Japan were not happy about these terms but to keep friendly relations with America they grudgingly accepted the terms.

Japan decided that to act like the western society they had to compete with them.

China lost much face during

their war with Britain. Nobody respected china after this.

Japan who had thought of china highly were now afraid of Briton to prevent war they abandoned the "don't think twice" edict (pretty self explanatory).

Japan had began to regret signing some of the treaties because they were unfair to Japan.

Japan really accepted (they had no choice) western culture after they abandoned the edict. Then they had much money, trade and enlightenment.
