The conflict is experienced midway towards the end of the story when the husband asks his wife to discover more about the voice he was hearing. The wife went up the stairs and saw the 'beggar' and began to ask what he needed. The bucket rider asked for the worst coal they had to keep him alive and she said to her husband that no one was up there and told the man nothing rather waved her apron in his direction whisking him away without any coal to survive, into the region of the ice mountains.
The setting of this story is all over the place first it begins where the Bucket rider is living and then moves with the story traveling to find the coal dealer where he ends up is the coal dealers shop when he doesn't receive the coal he is the whisked away to the ice mountains
The theme or over all message of this story would be to always try and do your best to help out a person in need whether it be giving them coal to keep them warm or giving them a special reminder to let them know how important they are to you and showing them that you care about them. Being selfish gets you know where in life but doing the wrong things for wrong reasons and sooner or later something is going to happen to you and nobody will want to help you because you weren't there for any of them when they needed you.
The first character is the narrator who is also known as the Bucket Rider. This character can be described as a poor, weak, helpless individual who is running out of coal during the colder season who is asking for coal from the coal dealer and is refused out of selfishness
The Second character would be the Coal dealer who loves to help out the community any way he can which would be his contribution of the coal to others. This man is a very kind and helpful gentleman. The coal dealer has hearing problems therefore when he heard the Bucket rider in a faint tone he asked his wife to look into the voice he was hearing outside.
The third character is the wife of the coal dealer. This woman is a very arrogant, selfish, greedy person who would not give the poor helpless man something as simple as coal to keep him warm and alive. The wife tells her husband that she sees no one and then tells the Bucket Rider to leave .
