"You're right!" said Bob.

"Are you right?" asked Bob.

"You're right," said Bob.

Mr Hicks' TOP Tips on Direct Speech!

Learn them!

And what do you have to put before inverted commas, if direct speech comes after the speaker?

Robert said_ "Hi!"

If speech comes before the speaker, what do you need before closing the inverted commas?

But what about when the direct speech comes before and after the speaker?

Yes! That's right!

A comma, a question mark or an exclamation mark.

"I'm here_" she answered_ "with Ben."

A comma!

You need a comma (or a question mark or exclamation mark) to end the first piece of speech...

And a full stop or another comma before the second piece!

"I'm here," she answered, "with Ben."

"I'm here," she answered. "I'm with Ben."

"You're right," said Bob. "It feels strange."

"You're right," Bob said, "it feels strange."

Time for some examples.

But pay attention to the punctuation before closing the inverted commas.

"If I were him" she whispered, "I'd tell the truth."

"I love prime numbers," Bob confessed. "they're my favourite type of number!"

"Where are you?" He asked.

"I'm tired." she said.

She said, "I feel so happy today,"

SPOT THE MISTAKE

OH! And remember that if it's a new speaker. It's a new line!

"Mr Hicks is right," said Bob.

"I agree," replied Jane.

Bob said, "You're right."

Bob said, "You're right!"

Bob asked, "Are you right?"
