Causes of the War

M.A.I.N.S

Trench Warfare USA Enters

Imperialism

Germany wanted to catch up to Britain and France with their big empires.

Russia and Austria-Hungary were big mish-mashes of people in an empire.

Comes back to competition – growing countries will fight over toys.

Nationalism

extreme pride for one’s country; like patriotism on steroids.

Multi-national countries had ethnic groups that wanted their own country – called “self- determination.”

Germany felt that they were the “best” and had a right over others.

Significant People

Kaiser Wilhelm II – German emperor. He built up German forces and had a very aggressive foreign policy.

Czar Nicholas II – emperor of Russia, didn’t want to fight his cousin Wilhelm, but chose to take Russia to war.

The Archduke – his murder by Gavrilo Princip forced Europe to cascade into war.

President Wilson- US President

President Wilson had kept us out of the war.

We officially enter April 6, 1917.

General Pershing insisted on our troops being trained and war ready before we fought.

Almost 12 months after we entered, the US finally joined the fighting

The goal of trench warfare was to defend one’s own trench while attempting to take the enemy’s at the same time. Troops faced off at each other one hundred yards away separated by “No Mans Land.” They used machine guns, rifles, zeppelins, tanks, planes, torpedoes, artillery, and poison gas.

June 28th, 1914 – the Archduke and his wife are killed by Gavrilo Princip

Within five weeks, most of Europe was plunged into war.

The US, however, initially stayed out of the conflict.

Militarism

The policy of military preparedness

Germany built its navy to compete with Britain; introduced new weapons.

Everyone saw this and tried to build themselves up as well.

Alliances

Countries in Europe formed alliances for protection.

Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy (Italy kind of “leaves” later).

France and Russia were afraid of Germany’s power, allied with Britain to make the Triple Entente. Meant to be a balance of power – actually worked to the OPPOSITE effect, drawing everyone into war

Outcome

Battles

The war was a huge wake up call for the worlds major nations. The US was the only true winner. Other nations suffered MAJOR casualties The Ottoman Empire and Austria- Hungary completely collapsed. Wilson created a 14 point plan to prevent another world war. Everyone was broke and women had to take on bigger responsibilities. The League of Nations was created but the US didn't join. Finally, as stated before, everyone was broke.

The Battle of Cantigny was the first battle that the American troops served in. The battle was fought on May 28, 1918. United States and France joined forces to fight Germany in the village of Cantigny. About one thousand allies were injured in the Battle. The American victory gave France the courage that the Americans could be trusted to go with them to take down Germany in Paris. Following the victory, France and UK had joined with United States at the Battle of the Piave River, which brought down Austria-hungary.

After the Caporetto Offensive, where the Italian Army lost over 300,000 men and most of its trench artillery, General Luigi Cadorna was replaced by General Armando Diaz.

Vittorio Orlando, the Italian prime minister, pressurized General Armando Diaz to launch an offensive in a war that would soon be over.On the 23rd October 1918, Armando Diaz launched an offensive at Vittorio Veneto. Diaz was able to put 57 Italian divisions in the field. After initial difficulties crossing the Piave River, the Italian Army took Vittorio Veneto. The Austro-Hungarian Army collapsed. When the ceasefire was called on 2nd November, the Italians had taken 300,000 prisoners.
