The typical time line for an hindu funeral is 10-13 days.

One the 13th day you hold a puja (prayer) for the gods.

Mourning period can last for about a year.

What to Wear

For hindu funerals you always dress very simply in white.

Preparation

Cremation

When a person is very close to death a priest or pandit is called to start the rites.

After death the body is then moved so that the head is facing the west and the feet facing the east.

Only men allowed at the cremation ceremony.

The eldest son or closest male relative will light the pyre after the prayers are said.

Ashes are later collected and kept or Ganges.

Preparation

  • Cleansing, and adorning the body. (Sandalwood/Haldi)
  • Garnish the body with flowers and jewels.
  • Pinda (rice balls) for the spirit of the deceased.
  • Open Casket.
