Skara Brae is situated on the shore line of Skaill, west coast of Mainland. The main island of the Orkney Islands situated off the north coast of Scotland. Skara Brae is known as a resonably sized Neolithic settlement. It is a group of eight dwellings and it was said to be occupied between 3100-2500 BC. It is believed to be Europe's most complete Neolithic village. Skara Brae was only discovered in 1850.

The Structure of Worship & Burial Chamber

The Hearth

The structure of worship was apparently a very spiritual place and they treated it like it was a telephone to there god and only certain people could enter the circle.

I made it out of cardboard.

The Burial chamber was where they buried there dead they would have a layer for each year and it was not a bad place to be as they wanted to respect the dead people and let them sleep in a nice place.

I made it out of cardboard and foam.

The stone hearth was mainly in the center of the dwelling. It was used to keep the family warm and a light also it was used to cook with.

I made the hearth out of cardboard and paint.

dresser

The Dresser

The Live Bait Tank

The dresser was made out of stone like nearly everything was and it was quite smooth and flat for there time and without electric saws or grinders. Some people don't think that the flat surface at least knee height is a second cabinet and not a dresser but with some people finding rock necklaces and other unique jewelery many think it is a dresser.

I made it out of cardboard.

The live bait tank was used for keeping their bait and fish that they would cook then eat.

I made the live bait tank out of white foam and texta and paint.

The Indoor-Toilet

The Stone Beds

On the opposite side of the cabinet from the bait boxes, is a small chamber referred to as a cell.

According to the explanatory material at the Skara Brae site drainage systems have been discovered in some of the cells. According to their interpretation, the cells may have been toilets.

I made it out of cardboard and foam.

The beds were formed from thin slabs of stone extending up at least knee high. Typical dwellings had them on your left and right as you enter.

Some people believe that the men's bed was bigger than the woman's bed because in most dwellings there would be to beds and one would always be bigger that the other.

I made it out of cardboard.

The Dresser

Opposite the entrance there was a cabinet. It was made out of stone and scientist believe that it would of been the first thing you see when you enter the dwelling.

I made it out of cardboard.
