How did Florence Kelley help?

What did Florence Kelley do?

She helped by changing the society of women and children.

She organized 60 different leagues in 20 different states and by 1913 nine states formed minimum wages.

  • American social and political reformer
  • She was a defender of women's rights, civil rights, labor laws, and child labor.
  • Most well known for her work against sweat shops. She worked to change the longs hours people would work, fought for minimum wage, and helped to ban child labor.

What is Progressivism?

Any political movement that works towards better conditions for people in a society.

Did Govt. do anything afterward?

Progressive or Muckraker?

Yes. The 19th amendment was put into place in 1919, and child labor laws and laws regulating the number of hours a person could work were put into place in 1938.

  • Kelley was a Muckraker because she had many published articles exposing the horrors of sweatshops.
  • She was appointed by the Illinois Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Gave speeches to the National Women's Suffrage Association
