To Kill A Mockingbird Project

By: Rishav

There are many examples in To Kill A Mockingbird, of prejudice. One obvious example, was the treatment of Tom Robinson. This was an example of prejudice because nobody knew Tom Robinson as a person. Yet, he was still treated poorly and disrespected. When the crew of angry adults show up at the prison, they are looking for Tom Robinson. They wanted to lynch him. It was not for Tom Robinson being guilty or not, but it was because he was black and accused of the crime in the first place. Of course, Atticus (with the unintentional and unexpected help from his children) stood tall and defended Tom Robinson. Eventually the mob left.

It does not take long for a reader to understand the tradition of racism in Maycomb. People were not treated equally. For example, Tom Robinson was an African American. who was accused of raping a white woman. Tom Robinson was not guilty of this crime. However, it was a given that he would be sent to jail regardless. This brings up the theme of "Individual vs. Society". So when Atticus was asked if they were going to win the case, he replied "no". He explained that racism was such a part of the Maycomb culture that just the fact that Tom Robinson was accused would be enough to send him to jail. He then went on to say, " Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win." This shows that Atticus is not racist and will fight for Tom Robinson's freedom regardless of the circumstances.

Prejudice Vs Tolerance

Individual VS Society

An example of tolerance in this book, was when Reverend Skyes let Jem and Scout participate in church. What was unusual about this gesture, was that it was a church for African-American people. While other people may have refused, Mr.Skyes agreed to allow the kids to participate. This gives readers an insight into what kind of person Mr.Skyes is.

Jem, Scout, and Dill stroll through Maycomb observing their surroundings from a child's perspective. As the story moves along, Jem and Scout grow more of an understanding for Atticus' job. Atticus was well respected by everyone. However, they did not understand the paramountcy of the case Atticus would take on involving Tom Robinson. With racism as a regular tradition in Maycomb, many people did not support Atticus defending an African-American.

Loss Of Innocence

Many people were disgusted with Atticus just because he defended Tom Robinson. This had an effect on the kids. They stood by their father, and were puzzled by the insults directed towards Atticus. At that point, the kids begin to lose their innocence. For example, when Jem an Scout are walking back to their house, they ecounter Mrs.Dubose. Mrs.Dubose had harsh comments for the two, but when she involved Atticus in one of her insults, Jem would not accept it. Mrs.Dubose said " Not only a Finch waiting for tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!" This comment left Jem raging. Once Mrs.Dubose was out of sight, Jem destroyed her beloved flowers in seek of redemption. This shows Jem lost his innocence because it made Jem perform an action he otherwise would not perform if it was not for the racist comments involving Atticus.

Another example that supports the theme of "Loss Of Innocence" is when Dill sheads a few tears during the trial. In Chapter 19, the climax of the trial is approaching, as Mr.Wilmer steps up to interrogate his witness and Tom Robinson. When interrogating Tom Robinson, Dill noticed Mr.Wilmer acknowledging him as "boy". Dill realized this was disrespectful. He has to excuse himself from the trial because he had to cry. He said "That old Mr.Gilmer doin' him thataway, talking so hateful to him." This shows Dill lost his innocence because he understands that Mr.Gilmer was treating Tom Robinson poorly because of his race. This forces Dill to contemplate the fact that some people are racist.
