Conclusion

  • Toothbrush is personal preference
  • Good oral health can be achieved with manual or electric with proper brushing
  • Regular visit to a dental hygienist is recommended
  • However, it is clinically proven that the electric toothbrush is superior when entailing its benefits, downfalls, and disease avoidance but it is up to the consumer itself to make the judgement call (Oral-B, 2015)

THANK YOU

disease prevention

  • Oral diseases occur when the oral cavity is not maintained clean, poor oral hygiene, consuming carbohydrate products and the build up of bacteria
  • Lead to inflamed gums and serious health implications (Canadian Dental Association, n.d.).
  • Periodontal disease, gingivitis and cavities are caused by improper brushing and incorrect angulation to remove biofilm
  • It’s proven that an electric toothbrushes can reduce biofilm on the surface of the tooth, preventing cavities, periodontal disease and gingivitis (Oral-B, 2015)
  • Individuals with health conditions such as Carpal Tunnel, Arthritis or any disability may be unable to perform oral hygiene care, electric is recommended
  • Oral disease can still be prevented by manual toothbrush with extra time and attention
  • Good oral hygiene it’s not only for dental health, but it’s for overall wellbeing

Group Work process

(PreeziImage, 2015)

For our presentation and essay we went trough couple of steps to work as team

1 We choose our topic as a group “ manual toothbrush vs electronic toothbrush”.

2 Decided on our group leader to be Meili.

3 We divided our parts and decided who will do what part of the essay and the presentation.

4 For the essay Meili did the introduction, Danise did the first body paragraph, Evran second body paragraph, Rahina completed third body paragraph and as a group we came up with conclusion for the essay.

5 Meili took the responsibility to do the Prezi and the rest of us helped her to finish it up.

6 Rahina did the hand out and rest of us helped her to finish it also

7 While everybody was working on their part through this processes we had two group meeting to see how everyone was doing if anybody needed any help to complete their task.

8 The day before our presentation we had last group meeting to go over our presentation and to add last details.

Is It TRUe that an electric is better than a manual toothbrush?

Advantages

Manual Toothbrush

ELectric Toothbrush

  • Affordable, $2-$8 (Sonneberg, 2015)
  • Accessible to low income families and undeveloped coutries
  • No maintenance cost
  • Greater variety (bristle, size and handle)
  • Portable
  • Better for cleaning tongue
  • Most models rotate “3000-4000” times a minute ( Beauty Health Tips, 2015)
  • Study from Oral-B states “brushes that worked with rotation oscillation action removed more plaque and reduced gingivitis more effectively than manual brushes in the short and long term” (Oral-B, 2015)
  • Environmentally friendly, “ takes between 14  and 42 toothbrush replacements head to equal to the amount of plastic in one manual toothbrush” (McManus, 2015)
  • Built in pressure sensor and timer
  • Aids proper brushing for people with medical conditions

History of The Toothbrush

3000 BC

1906

1960

  • First electric toothbrush
  • Ability to remove plaque in contrast to a manual was minimal
  • Primal evidence of toothbrush
  • "chew sticks" from a ragged twig (The Library of Congress, 2010)
  • Dr. Alfred Fone delegated dental asisstant, Irene Newman to preventative dental care
  • diminish tooth loss from "dental caries and periodontal disease" (Raposo, 2015)
  • Oral health became a growing area of concern

Our group is presenting an essay in an argumentative perspective; talking about the various advantages and disadvantages of a manual and electric toothbrush as well as the disease that can occur if not used properly. There is a starting to the argument, elaborating on the facts gathered to support the argument in the middle, and an end to the discussion.
