The Beliefs

Culture

The Segu people believed in worshiping their dead ancestors. Prayers and sacrifices were made to the ancestors. They believed that the dead were still around and did this out of love and respect to the ones that passed away.

Their culture were based on religions scriptures, trades, and war. Their scriptures were from their ancestors decisions. The trades were mostly of slaves that were captured in many of the war. Segu grew and it made the slaves fight in war to continue prospering.

The History

Segu had a very successful reign until the battle of Noukouma, in 1818. Where they lost, the whole empire survived. Even though they survived, the empire was weaken greatly. on March 10, 1861, Segu was defeated by Umar Tall's mujahideen and it became apert of the Toucouleur Empire.

The Rulers

1750, a freed slave named Ngolo Diarra seized the throne and re-established stability. He reigned for nearly forty years of relative prosperity. This made the Ngolosi, his descendants, continue to rule the Empire until the empire fall. Ngolo's son,Mansong Diarra, took the throne following his father's 1795 death. He began a series of successful conquests, including that of Tomboctou and the Macina region. Which was very successful. Diarra eventually died in 1795.

The kingdom of Segu is in the Bambara Empire. It is founded the Niger River. The coordinates of Segu is 13.4317°N,6.2482°W.

The language of the Segu people is Bambara. Bambara is spoken in different ways, but it is the language is still called Bambara. Te dialects depend on where they are from.
