Characters

  • Isagani Villamor - The best friend of Basilio, he is a poor law student and poet. He has little fear of authority and speaks openly of his patriotic ideals, becoming the leader of a group of students who plan to set up a school for the teaching of Spanish to natives.
  • Makaraig - The rich student who offered his own house as the dormitory of the students studying in Ateneo Municipal de Manila. He leads the students with Isagani to set up a spanish school, but later the were defeated in the movement.
  • Simoun - Crisostomo Ibarra, believed to be dead at the end of Noli Me tangere, made his fortune abroad and returns to the Philippines as the wealthy jeweller, Simoun, disguised with a beard and tinted glasses.
  • Basilio - Taking to heart the advice of the dying boatman Elias to study at the end of Noli me tangere, he went to Manila after burying his mother. There, he was taken in by Capitan Tiago and was able to go to San juan De Letran. Though a diligent student, he failed to please his teachers, who were affronted by the efforts of a poor native to improve his status in life.

  • Crisostomo Ibarra returns as Simoun, as a rich jeweler and a confidant of the Captain-General.
  • His purpose is to plot a revolt against the Spaniards and win back Maria Clara.
  • He uses his influence to encourage government officials to become corrupt and further abuse the people.
  • He tried to convince Basilio but he refused to join him.

  • Paulita Gomez -  A beautiful girl who is admired by all the students, she at first shows preference for Isagani.
  • Father Florentino - A secular Filipino priest. Pressured by his mother, he became a priest even though he was in love.
  • Juli San Jose - Juliana, Kabesang Tales's daughter and Basilio's sweetheart is known by the nickname Juli.
  • Kabesang Tales - Aspiring to start his own farm, he suffered great losses. Known to be dependable, he was elected the kabesa or head of the barangay, which meant often having to appease the higher officials by shouldering the expenses of those who were unable to pay their taxes.
  • Don Custodio - A high official in the government, he has held many posts, many of which he had no qualifications for.

Rizal’s purpose in writing the El Filibusterismo is not to spark a revolution but rather to help the Filipino people see the condition and situation of our country during the Spanish time. But it resulted to revolution and Rizal did not intend it to happen because he wanted a silent progress and change and not violence.

Plot

  • Simoun's first attempt at revolution fails when he hears of Maria Clara's death.
  • Basilio was arrested along with other students because of forming an allegedly seditious organization.
  • Her girlfriend Julie, was killed trying to escape the friar's amorous advances.
  • Simoun then tells Basilio his plan at the wedding of Paulita Gómez and Juanito.

Plot

  • Father Salvi confirmed that Simoun is Ibarra before the explosion of the lamp.
  • Isagani, a student and friend of the newly-weds knew the plot and because of his undying love to Paulita threw the lamp before it explodes.
  • The plot was unravelled and a shoot-to-kill order for Simoun was commissioned.
  • He drank a poison and as it effects started to take toll on his body, he was able to confess his plans and real name to a Filipino priests.
