SALT II was a series of talks between the U.S. and Soviet negotiators from 1972-1979. Which sought out to curtail the manufacture of strategic nuclear weapons. SALT II helped the U.S. to discourage the soviets from arming their 3rd generation ICBM's of SS-17, SS-19, and SS-18 types with many more multiple independently target-able reentry vehicles. The SALT II treaty banned new missile programs which meant that both sides had to limit their strategic missile types development.
Secretary of Defense McNamara said,
Let me emphasize -- and I cannot do so too strongly -- that our decision to go ahead with a limited ABM deployment in no way indicates that we feel an agreement with the Soviet Union on the limitation of strategic nuclear offensive and defensive forces is in any way less urgent or desirable.
These men were talking about treaties and important things including things that were going to be used for years and years to come.
The Cold war was happening and there was also a war going on between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan.
SALT changed the world because of the fact that it was a series of conversations that stopped two countries from sending missiles and starting a whole new war from happening since WWII just ended.
The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks were 2 rounds of bilateral talks involving the united states and the USSR; the cold war super powers- on the issue of armament control. The 2 rounds of talks and arguments were SALT I and SALTII.
Negotiations commenced in Helsinki, Finland, in November 1969. SALT I led to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and an interim agreement between the two countries. Although SALT II resulted in an agreement in 1979, the United States chose not to ratify the treaty in response to the Soviet war in Afghanistan, which took place later that year. The agreement expired on December 31, 1985 and was not renewed.
We learned a lot about this topic. It was very interesting and without this project, we would have had no idea that the event even happened.
The SALT was a process of conversations that helped the U.S and the Soviet Union figure out their issues about weaponry and safety for that countries people.
