Pastoralism

From Village to Empire.

Exit Question: Today, we know much more about Rome than the civilization of the Huns. Why do you think they left behind so few records?

Get ready...

Answer in 2-3 sentences

Think about a typical day. How often do you come in contact with animals? Consider pets, meat, dairy, etc.

What is Pastoralism?

Pastoralism is the branch of agriculture concerned with the raising of livestock. It can also be called ANIMAL HUSBANDRY: the care, tending and use of animals such as horses, camels, goats, cattle, and sheep.

Discuss: What can humans do BETTER when they can harness the power of animals?

Horses vastly increased human speed and power. Nomads could now go much farther, must faster.

For the civilizations that were settling, or had no access to horses, this new power could prove catastrophic.

Written Conversation: Write down ways DOMESTICATION of the horse changed human society. Be prepared to discuss.

And then, man met the horse. By the 2000 B.C. horses were changing human society.

But when people began herding animals, fewer people were required to feed growing villages.

In the 13th Century, Mongol Pastoralists perfected the stirrup, enabling them to fire arrows from horseback. Exploding out of Asia, they inflicted cataclysmic damage on the early Chinese, European and Islamic worlds.

How Sheep Became Livestock and answer the question in 3-4 sentences.

When the Aztec first met the Spanish in 1519, they had no access to horses. When they first saw the Spanish riding on horseback, some believed it was a man/horse hybrid.

But if dogs helped us hunt...why'd we give it up?

What kind of advantage did this give the Spanish?

In 452, Attila the Hun led an army to attack Rome. In order to protect the vulnerable city, Pope Leo met with Attila. It is unclear exactly what was said between the two leaders. What we do know is that at the end of the meeting, Attila and his army departed, leaving Rome untouched.
