Science and Technology Inventions and Advancements of the Renaissance Era

Inventions of the 16th to 17th Century

Inventions of the 15th Century

The 16th and 17th century was when chemistry developed from medieval alchemy and science of astronomy evolved from astrology.

During the first centuries of the Renaissance scientist and inventors were just starting to make great discoveries and inventions

The 15th century sparked with many different science advancements and inventions.

-The first flush toilet was designed and invented in 1569 by Sir John Harrington. The first name for the flush toilet was called the water closet

-In 1456, Johannes Gutenberg invented the first printing press. Before books were printed, monks were used to hand write books. The invention of the printing press allowed ordinary people to learn how to read. The first printed book was the bible.

-In 1608, Hans Lippershey invented the first model of the refracting telescope. This sparked the investigation of our universe and our place in the stars. Later, astronomer Galileo redesigned the telescope and used it to observe the planets in our solar system. In 1688, Sir Isaac Newton invented the reflecting telescope that was even more powerful.

-In 1590, the compound microscope was invented by Zacchairas Janssen by combining glass lenses in a tube. Later, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek designed an even more powerful microscope that could enlarge things 270 times larger. The invention of the microscope helped discover blood cells.

Astronomy During the Renaissance

The First Idea of the Flying Aircraft

How Medical Science Changed During the 15th Century

Our place in the universe during the Renaissance was a humbling topic back then. Astronomers and scientist did not know too much about the earth and space at the time until astronomers started using the telescope to observe the planets in our solar system

The first theory that was proposed about the universe came from astronomer Ptolemy. He thought that the earth was the center of the universe and all the other objects in space revolved around it.

In the 14th century, artist Leonardo Da Vinci came up with the first ideas of the aircraft. He wanted to come up with a technology that could get humans off the ground to fly like birds. His first plans were to use flapping wings.

His inspiration was said to have came from kites bats and birds.

Da Vinci's plans did not succeed after he realized humans wouldn't be able to produce enough power to get the aircraft off the ground. Leonardo also invented the first parachute in 1485.

The 15th century was when doctors and scientist really went in depth with researching the human body. During this time doctors started to dissect corpses. This is how they discovered all of the systems that make up our body such as our digestive and nervous system.

Before doctors and scientist knew much about the human body, diseases and sicknesses were very hard to treat. It wasn't until the microscope was invented that scientist could discover bacteria and diseases.

Ptolemy's theory was proven wrong in the 1620's after a Polish astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus proposed the idea that it was the sun that was the center and the earth and other planets orbited around it. After Galileo used the telescope to observe the planets, he prove Copernicus's theory right.
