Article 2

Elin Ghazikhanian is a psychology and social behavior major at University of California, Irvine. This article is about her own personal experience with this stereotype.

After enrolling at UCI, Elin presumed the school was mostly Asian and she did not want to go for that reason. During the opening day for all freshman, to her surprise, she was right. Over the course of the years, she had made many new friends that were all asian, and Elin even had her first asian crush. Elin goes on to say towards the end that, she had "learned that there were different kinds of Asians: Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc..."(Ghazikhania).

Article 3

Tracey Zhu is a student at Mount Holyoke College who wrote this article for her American Orientalisms class.

Article 1

Take Notice: Not all Asians are Chinese

Tracey is upset that when people ask her 'What are you?', she just replies with an answer that they are looking for, Chinese. She is pissed that people assume that every Asian they meet will probably be Chinese. Tracey joined a group named AiR where they talk about chinese history and ongoing issues in China. She is now a proud member of this group and joins in rallies to defend Asian American rights.

Patricia Tisak was a sophomore at Penn State University and was majoring in journalism when she wrote this article. This article is from her own personnal experience with this stereotype.

Through highschool, she was always called Cindy by her peers due to another asian girl with that name. Eventually, patricia met her and instead of seeing "a mirror image, [the only] resemblance when we both wore our glasses" (Tisak). Even after graduation, the ran into the same problem at Penn State. People come up to her mistaking her for another asian girl all the time. Tisak states that "no matter how I classify myself, people at Penn State will always identify me as chinese... I am Filipino-Ameican" (Tisak).

Rhetorical Communication

These three articles proves my thesis because they are all first hand experiences of this stereotype. These three people felt the full brunt of the stereotype which made them feel as if their individuality was taken away from them. In reality, there are many different ethnicities in Asia, but we assume that they are all the same because of their appearances. Article 2 shows that we make these assumptions because Elin walks onto campus assuming all asians are chinese and after her time at UCI, she discovered that there are more ethnicities than just chinese. The other two articles shows us how this stereotype hurt them due to their appearances and where they come from.

All Asians are Chinese

Reasons:

In news, they are the most talked about.

All asians look the same.

ex. Slanted eyes

skin color

Were they come from

Thesis

The stereotype that all asians are chinese proves harmful in terms of their identities and where they come from.

History

  • During 1800s, chinese made up most of the population for asian immigrants.
  • Chinese immigrants took up many jobs in the west such as factory work, agriculture, and especially in building the railroads.
  • Since there is a large number of chinese immigrants taking jobs, Americans tried to come up with ways to reduce the amount of chinese immigrants coming into the country.
  • Due to these events and great number of chinese immigrants, people now assume that all asians are chinese.
