Paradox or Antithesis?

by Lorraine Davis

Antithesis

Practice

Antithesis is a rhetorical term for the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas in BALANCED phrases of clauses.

Example

"We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. " Martin Luther King Jr.

1. "One small step for a man, one giant leap for all mankind."

2. "War is peace"

3. "Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again."

Differences

Antithesis is opposite phrases of clauses, but these opposites do not conflict with each other

Paradox is a statement that is true but seems to be untrue. A paradox often seems to defy logic.

Paradox is not governed by any structural limitations or expectations.

Paradox

Examples

Paradox= a statement that presumably contradicts itself yet carries with it some truth.

A paradox presents what seems to be an invalid argument and often promotes critical thinking.

Antithesis: " Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue" Barry Goldwater

Paradox: "What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young" George Bernard Shaw

Example

"I can resist anything but temptation" Oscar Wilde
