Invention

When Walter Diemer first invented bubble gum, it was on accident. Walter Diemer was working at Fleer Company at the time, and they were loosing money.

Fleer Company told Walter Diemer to start creating a different gum base. He went through a lot of trail and errors. Diemer eventually made a great batch of bubble gum. It was nice and soft and the gum didn't stick to your face after blowing the bubble.

Later Years

Many salesmen were sent around the country to advertise this gum. But before they could do this, they first needed to be taught to actually blow bubbles. The gum was instantly popular. Within the first three months of Dubble Bubble being on the market, imitation gum was already being made. It became more popular than Tootsie Rolls and was the worlds bestselling one cent candy. In 1941 alone, it sold 4.5 million dollars worth of gum.

Double Bubble controlled the bubble-gum market, and were unchallenged for years. Walter stayed with Fleer Company and eventually became vice president. He died on January 9,1998 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania .
