During the Middle Ages, the castle walls became higher and stronger, a new way was invented to destroy them. One weapon was the catapult. The term catapult was derived from the Greek word "katapultos". The earliest catapult was seen in China during the 3rd/4Th century BC.

There were some similarities between the Ballista and the Mangonel are both the same in function. Both are small and able to move around during battles and they required less human force than what the Trebuchet did. The difference was that the Mangonal wasn't very accurate as the Ballista. The Mangonal was also similar to the Trebuchet because both of them had wheels to be a easy move around. the biggest difference between the Ballista , Mangonel, and Trebuchet was that there structure, the tallest, widest, or the smallest. The similar thing that they all shared was that they were all medieval weapons.

3 types of catapults

It was modified by the Romans in

400 BC. It was first used in 398 BC. The way this works is by rotating on axle with a large beam.powered by counter weight on one end of arm which was used to knock down castle walls They all are used to throw or sling obejects and they are all catalpults which was built along time ago during the b.c . The pros of this catapult is that it can throw heavy objects farther than others. The cons of this catapult would be how bulky and complex they are.

Mangonels fired heavy projectiles from a bucket at the end of its arm. The Mangonel was used for throwing objects at castles and cities. This type of catapult was easy to construct. The Mangonel was not as accurate as the Ballista but it was able to throw further distance than a Trebuchet. It was used during the medival period. Some pros of the Mangonel would be that it replaced ballistas in the late Roman empire. They were simpler and used less material to build. Some cons would be that is was slower and was less accurate than the ballista.

The word "Trebuchet" is from French, and meant "to fall over or rotate about the middle" It also meant a big, heavy beam. Today a Trebuchet is any kind of catapult that is powered by a weight on one end of an arm, and a sling on the other end. Trebuchet, came later than the others (middle ages versus Classical period). Thne pros for the Trebuchet would be that it was able to throw much heavier stones than the mangonel, and its power was higher. The cons would be that it used a huge amount of material to build and was slow to operate. It also wasn't very portable.

Ballista

The ballista was invented by the Greeks.
