Lyric poem

Epic poetry

In a lyric poem, a poet will use words to get across emotions or ideas about a situation or experience. They are not very long. Songs often follow this format.

An epic poem is lengthy. It tells a story, usually a myth or legend. The poem will describe the adventures of the hero.

Poetry

Poetry is a structured and imaginative form of writing that uses rhythm and/or rhyme to achieve a particular sound or mood.

Stanza

Assignment

Write an acrostic poem of your own, using at least 5 letters. Each line must include more than one word. Include an illustration to go with your poem.

A stanza is a group of lines in a poem. They are kind of like paragraph for poetry. The following example includes 2 stanzas:

Day is dying! Float, o song,

Down the westward river,

Requiem chanting to the Day,

Day, the mighty giver!

Pierced by shafts of Time he bleeds,

Melted rubies sending

Through the river and the sky,

Earth and heaven blending.

A b a b rhyme scheme

Acrostic poem

An acrostic poem uses one letter of each line to spell out a word or sentence. Example:

Like a sunflower

Our romance turns to the sun's

Very bright rays of light, in order to

Evolve and grow stronger.

An a b a b rhyme scheme means that every other word rhymes, like the following:

The colors caressing each other up high (rhyme: a)

Mixing and mating to create something new (b)

The setting sun painting a cloudy sky (a)

Presenting to us a spectacular view (b)
