Tamborrada por Mary y Moreen

History and Origin

Most Spanish fiestas and traditions have a vague origin that is difficult to trace back. The Tamborrada has both a mythical and a historic origin.

The mythical origin describes the legend of a baker filling up water barrels at a fountain. The baker began to sing and the girls and servants behind in the line started banging their basins in sync with his singing.

Another belief is that the Tamborrada originated from the soldiers' march during the sieges in the 18th century. The townspeople would then mock the soldiers by imitating their serious march and making noise with spoons and frying pans.

What happens?

The Tamborrada is a twenty four hour celebration occurring from the 20th to the 21st of January. Midnight on the 20th, the marchers begin drumming and the city’s flag is raised in the Constitution Square. The marchers wear soldier or chef costumes and parade down the streets of the city, drumming to the beat of the San Sebastian March song. The different groups of marchers represent the many gastronomic societies in San Sebastian and they compete with each other. Usually, the medley of drumming continues until morning, where there is a short break to eat some food! The children are awarded prizes, including the “Tambor de Oro” prize. On the evening of the 21st, the marchers assemble again at the Constitution Square and a tamborrada by the Union Artesana ends the celebration.
