Virginia's Valentine poem to Poe in 1846:

Ever with thee I wish to roam--

Dearest my life is thine.

Give me a cottage for my home

And a rich old cypress vine,

Removed from the world with its sin and care

And the tattling of many tongues.

Love alone shall guide us when we are there--

Love shall heal my weakened lungs;

And Oh; the tranquil hours we'll spend,

Never wishing that others may see!

Perfect ease we'll enjoy, without thinking to lend

Ourselves to the world and its glee--

Ever peaceful and blissful we'll be.

It's a Love Story (baby just say yes)

The Basics

Discussion

  • Poe's aunt Maria Clemm became a new mother figure to Poe
  • Aunt Maria's daughter, Virginia, acted as a message carrier for Poe's love affairs, but Poe eventually fell in love with Virginia
  • An over protective brother in law of Virginia almost prevented Virginia from marrying Poe at such a young age (she was 13 years old)
  • Have no fear, Poe arranged an agreement for him to take care of Aunt Maria and the rest of the family in exchange for Virginia's hand in marriage
  • Poe married Virginia secretly on September 22, 1835- He was 26 and she was 13, although she put on the certificate that she was 21

  • Parents died within 3 years of Poe's birth, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant family of John Allan in Richmond, Virginia; Poe's siblings went to live with other families
  • By 13, Poe had enough poems to make a book, but Poe's headmaster suggested that he shouldn't do that.
  • Poe went to the University of Virginia, and John Allan sent him very little money to help him with finance.
  • Poe started to gamble to help with finance
  • How could the events in Poe's life influenced his writing? Any events specifically?
  • Knowing his biography, how do you think his life ties into "Tell Tale Heart"?

  • Poe enrolls in the U.S Army
  • Mother dies of tuberculosis after he spent 2 years in the army
  • John Allan helps Poe obtain a position at West Point, where he was kicked out 8 months later due to a threat Poe made to Allan after Allan remarried without telling Poe

Aftermath
