The set would look similar to the one shown below, however, it would be two couches, or love seats on either side of the table, not chairs.

The set, being that it takes place in a single setting, would take place in a modern-era mansion sitting room. There would be a coffee table in the center of the room, obviously large enough for someone to hide under and pop out. This is something that I would be able to rent, as it would have to be elegant to go with the play, along with the 2 couches set on either side of the table. I would be able to build the flooring and backdrop.

Stage Type

Audience Size

I would like the audience size to be somewhere between 150-175 people.

Having the modern look for this play, however, would not change the concept or message of the play. Though I would have to be hired by a scriptwriter who would have to give the characters a modern background story that would still be as close to the original play as possible, as it was actually done in 2009. The story was practically the same, only with minor changes to make the play more modern.

  • 2 love seats
  • Chandelier hanging above
  • Fake fire place behind the table, still visible
  • Flower arrangement on the table
  • Family picture (of our actors) hanging above the fireplace

Set Design

Even though Tartuffe was originated in the late 1600s, I would like to design the play as if it were taking play in present day. I believe having the play being modernized to present day would help gauge an audience’s attention a little more and they would be able to relate to the play that much more. Having a set based on a modern day mansion, it could be more appealing to the eye for the audience.
