This is the full term of the training programme. E.G Training for an event/ Olympics/ Championships. This usually lasts a year or longer.

Mesocycles are a way of breaking down the macrocycle - These are usually 4-6 week blocks or monthly periods. This is where you will break down your training to work on set components that you need to develop.

Microcycles are broken down mesocycles. These are 1 week blocks of training.

Individual sessions are the training you put in on a day to day basis.

For example we have just competed in the 2012 Olympics hurdling event and came 4th. We are now training for the 2016 olympics . How could we break down our macrocycle?

How long will the Macrocycle be for the olympics?

How long do you think each Mesocycle would be? Obviously this is a pictorial representation it does not need to be broken down into the same number of blocks. What do you think these blocks focus on?

Microcycles are weekly blocks, what do you think each weekly block would focus on?

What differences would you see in the individual sessions?
