Loudspeakers

A loudspeaker is a permanent magnet surrounding an electromagnet connected to a cone.

  • When an electrical current passes through a wire coil in a magnetic field, it produces a force which varies with the current applied
  • Called an "magneto electric apparatus", it was invented in 1874 by Ernst W. Siemens. In 1923, Bell Labratories wanted to create a full musical playback phonograph with speakers and they did. This became our speakers today.
  • Loudspeakers use electro-mechano-acoustic transduction. They convert electrical energy into mechanical energy which in turn is converted into acoustic/sound energy.
