CLASSIFICATION OF SKILLS

SKILLS ARE CLASSIFIED BY TWO MAIN CONTINUMMS; ENVIRONMENTAL AND DIFFICULTY

SKILLS ARE DETERMINED BY THE ENVIRONMENT THEY ARE PLAYED IN, IF THE SKILL IS INFLUENCED BY ENVIRONMENT THEN THIS IS AN OPEN SKILL. HOWEVER, IF THE SKILL IS NOT INFLUENCED THEN ITS REGARDED AS A CLOSED SKILL.

WHEN A SKILL IS PERFORMED IT IS CLASSED AS EITHER SIMPLE OR COMPLEX. THIS IS DEPENDENT ON THE DIFFICULTY OF THE ACTION, THIS IS WHEN THE PERFORMER HAS TO MAKE ALOT OF DECISIONS BEFORE COMPLETING THE SKILL.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this section you will understand:

  • how to classify skills
  • different structures of practices
  • how to apply these to choose the best practice to develop a range of skills

"The ability to bring about predetermined results with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy"

Massed/ Distributed Practices

Massed

Where the skill is practices until it is learning and without breaks. This is normally for fit & experienced athletes.

Distributed

Where the skill is practices over several sessions or with rest breaks. This is normally for lower ability, experience or fitness level.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Open/ Closed Skill

4.1

Classification of skill

Open Skills - where the action takes place in a changing situation.

Requiring the player to adapt to these changes.

Closed Skills - take place in a stable and predictable environment.

They have distinct start and end points and are not affected by external factors

Skills are neither completely open nor completely closed but are classified on a spectrum

Closed

Open

Where would you categorise the following skills?

Rugby conversion

Cricket Cover Drive

Football Penalty

Long Jump

Golf Put

Archery

DIFFICULTY

Tennis Serve

Basic/ Complex skill

Basic Skill - or simple skill

One that players find easy to perform, requiring little concentration

Complex Skill

requires players attention and concentration as it is technically difficult to perform. These skills require greater practice time.

Practice Structures

Practice sessions need to be planned according to the activity/ sport.

The Practice then needs to be based on skill level, fitness, age and experience.

Basic

2. Tackling in Football

Open or closed?

Basic or Complex?

High or Low organisation?

Now design a Practice to best suit the skill.

Complex

How do your practices differ from Rugby to Cricket?

Low/ High organisation skill

Low Organisation Skill

can be broken down into clear, simple parts.

High Organisation Skill

has many complicated phases that are closely linked together. These phases cannot broken down, they require coordination and timing.

As part of your AEP you will have to chose skill from your sport and identify its place on the continuums.

Start thinking about this now and making notes that will help you in the write up!

Difficulty continuum of skills...

KEY TERMS!

MOTOR SKILL - AN ACTION OR TASK THAT HAS A TARGET OR GOAL THAT REQUIRES VOLUNTARY BODY AND/OR LIMB MOVEMENT TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL

PERCEPTION - INTERPRETATION OF STIMULI, THIS IS BASED UPON ON WHAT IS PERCEIVED, EXPERIENCE AND ATTENTION OF ABILITY.

COGNITIVE SKILLS - THIS IS THE INTELLECTUAL ABILITY OF THE PERFORMER, THIS HELPS US MAKE SENSE OF WHAT IS REQUIRED.

Where would you put the skills below on the continuum?

PASSING - RUGBY

FREE THROW - BASKETBALL

SHOOTING - FOOTBALL

FOREHAND - TENNIS

PUTTING - GOLF

DIVING - SWIMMING

JUMPING - LONG JUMP

DODGING - DODGEBALL

BOWLING - CRICKET

COMPLEX

SIMPLE

IMPLICATIONS OF TRAINING AND COACHING

WHAT WOULD WE HAVE TO CONSIDER WHEN COACHING OPEN, CLOSED, SIMPLE AND COMPLEX SKILLS?

CLOSED SKILLS CAN BE COACHED REPETITIVELY BECAUSE THE ENVIRONMENT ALLOWS IT, ALTHOUGH A MASSIVE DISADVANTAGE IS WHEN THE PERFORMER FACES A CHANGING SCENARIO. IN CONTRAST, OPEN SKILLS ARE VERY HARD TO REPLICATE BECAUSE THE ENVIRONMENT CAN'T BE REPLICATED WITHIN TRAINING SESSIONS.

COACHING IS DEPENDENT ON THE TASK, ABILITY OF THE PERFORMER AND THE CLASSIFICATION OF SKILL. THIS IS KEY WHEN COACHING SIMPLE AND COMPLEX SKILLS, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE ABILITY OF THE COACH. JUST BECAUSE THE COACH USED TO BE A GOOD PERFORMER DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE SKILLS CAN BE TAUGHT AND TRAINED AS EFFECTIVELY AS SHOWN IN THE TWO VIDEOS ABOVE.
