Your turn...

  • How do you know about him?
  • When was he born?
  • His schooling subjects he was good at and how they helped.
  • What does he think about the Capitol? How can you tell this is how he feels? Why does he feel like this?
  • Compare how he looked as a teenager to how he looked now
  • When did his life change forever?
  • Make a link between his life and your life (at the reaping)
  • What happened after the Hunger Games?
  • How does he feel training the other tributes?
  • Do you want to win the Hunger Games after seeing Haymitch?

I have heard many stories about Haymitch, after meeting him, I find it hard to believe they are all true! Haymitch was born in District 12 forty-two years ago. As a child, he was smart, he went to school regularly, many believe this contributed to his success in the Hunger Games. The skills he learnt at school were invaluable during his quest in the blood-thirsty games. He was taught how to fence, which is why he is good at fighting. He also learnt biology: his knowledge of plants helped his hungry cravings! As a teenager, he was smart and fit, unlike the lazy, unkempt figure we see today.

At the age of 18, Haymitch's life changed forever, he stood in the town square - as I did a few days ago - and waited patiently. Some people thing he was lucky because he was a strong 18 year-old; other think he was unlucky as it was his final year and he was so close to avoiding the deadly battle. The devastation hat followed his victory could never have been predicted! As all winners do, Haymitch moved to Victor's Row, the nicest part of District 12, that is the only advantage of winning the games. Since his triumph, Haymitch has had to train the unlucky tributes chosen to participate in the Hunger Games. He trains them knowing at least one will perish, so far he has seen 46 tributes die. He blames himself for their deaths. He drinks to forget his guilt - it doesn't seem to work. After seeing what winning has done to Haymitch, I'm not sure I want to win - then I think of Prim and know I must try.

Your turn...

  • Tell the reader what he looks like
  • How clever is he? How do you know this?
  • What does he think about the Capitol? How can you tell this is how he feels? Why does he feel like this?
  • ed, same ed sentence

This weak, frail man was a shadow of the victor I had heard so many stories of. As he spoke to me about the knowledge and tricks I needed to know, I saw an insight into his skilful mind like that of a cunning fox planning its next attack. Haymitch found it hard to hide his hatred towards the Capitol, he is extremely disrespectful: he blames them for the pain and torment he has experienced. Abernathy is depressed, depressed because he has to live with the awful crimes he comitted to survive. Although I have noticed all of his faults, I can't help but feel sorry for him! His dedication to Peeta and me shows that he can care for people.

Your turn...

  • How long have you spent with Haymitch? How have you got to know him?
  • What have you found out about him?
  • 1 characteristic : detail (why was he like this?)
  • Doesn't get much sleep - why?
  • How does he treat you, why do you think he treats you like this?
  • Emotion word, (comma) sentence

Things to include...

After spending a few days with Haymitch, I realised he was an extremely complex person. He was always grouchy: he didn't seem to get much sleep. I wondered what kept him awake, could it be the painful memories from his past? Haymitch didn't seem to get close to anyone, he always kept Peeta and me at a distance, I think he was scared of getting close to Tributes as they were so easily snatched from him. Exhausted, Haymitch often lost concentration, this worried me, I needed his full attention if I was going to survive these treacherous games!
