Military maps show the
Earth drawn to scale
as you would see it
from above
The military uses the
Universal Transverse
Mercator (UTM) and
the Universal Polar
Stereographic (UPS)
grid system.
Maps and Map reading are essential
skills that all of the armed forces
need in their occupation.
The military use grid maps in order to
find specific points on a map. They are
very useful in the military because they
can pinpoint specific places and the map
is also drawn to scale.
Polar projections show
the earth from one of
the two poles. Polar
projections show The
Great Circle Route.
Pilots use polar maps because it shows
the shortest path between two points.
The shortest distance can be found by stretching a string between them. The polar projections help air pilots go from point A to point B. The constant gyro track will be a great circle.
Pilots use pilotage. This is where
they use navigation with reference
to the visible features of the Earth.
The world is split into 60 different zones on a military map.
