What are the benefits of being proactive?

By being proactive, a person has more control over him/herself and life. Proactive people take control of their lives and responsibility for their choices. They learn to live with the things they can't control and focus their energy and effort on things that they can control. By doing this, proactive people are able to bounce back when something bad happens. As a result, proactive people are more empowered and live their lives more at peace.

Proactive Character Analysis:

Mr. Jamie Escalante

Analysis

Mr. Jamie Escalante exhibited the characteristics of a proactive person throughout the movie "Stand and Deliver". He believed in his students in spite of the difficulties and obstacles they faced. This belief guided his actions as he exhibited a "can-do" attitude and passed that attitude on to his students. Mr. Escalante faced opposition by offering solutions and options such as voluntarily working during the summer without extra pay. Finally, his words, "You can do it," were examples of positive proactive language that encouraged and inspired the students so that they could become successful and exhibit the characteristics of proactivity.

Feelings / Attitude

Proactive people have a "can-do" attitude.

Mr. Escalante believed that his students could do more than basic math after getting to know them better. He said, "students will rise to the level of expectation." His belief in their ability to do better affected his actions.

How can you be more proactive in your life?

Language

You can become more proactive by:

  • taking responsibility for everything in your life.
  • having a "can-do" attitude.
  • thinking before you act.
  • coming up with options and solutions to problems.
  • using positive language.

Proactive people sound positive and say: "I'll do it. Let's look at our options. There's got to be a way."

Throughout the movie, Mr. Escalante told his students, "You can do it." When talking to Ana's father in the restaurant, he shared his belief in her by stating, "Ana could go to college, come back, and teach you how to run this place."

Actions

Proactive people think about solutions and options; if they don't like a situation, they try to change it.

Mr. Escalante asked for permission to teach his students Calculus and refused to accept "no" as an answer. When presented with reasons why he couldn't, Mr. Escalante offered the option of teaching through the summer with no extra pay as a solution.
