Welcome to the Generations United & Mentor Up guide with six key areas to help you (youth!)
to develop an intergenerational project.

What is an Intergenerational Project?

Intergenerational projects bring different ages together. This toolkit is about the power of connecting the strengths of older adults and youth in making a difference in each other's lives, as well as that of the community.

The Social Media Examiner (
gives some pointers on how to share information about your project and events through different social media.

You'll want to get people involved with your project.

You can:

> Post fliers around the neighborhood
> Talk with other youth at school
> Go to a senior center or a community center
> Use social media tools

First you need a project

1. What are you are passionate about?

2. Connect with your purpose

3. Research what is needed in your community and what is currently offered in your community

4. Build a team


Think about the number of times the generations will be getting together.
Will you have one event, or will it be ongoing? The more you come together, the stronger the relationships.

Look for organizations (like Generations United) who are looking to support aspiring young people.
Develop a Budget
Making sure that each part of your project has enough money is
important so that your events are a success.
If you are holding an event where you are providing food, you also have to consider things like plates and napkins.

In addition, you might have to pay for a space.

Prepare your Pitch!
Practice talking with others about your project

In a few minutes you will want to say:
> Who you are
> What you will be doing
> Why others should be involved

Think about the ages of who you want to reach. Some social media tools are more popular with younger people and some are more popular with older people.

Take a look at the charts below. If you wanted to reach people over 65 years old, would you just use social media? If you use social media, which tool would help you reach the most adults?
Now it's time to review the details:

Do you have all of the supplies you need?
Have participants received training?
Do you have an alternate plan in case you need to make changes?
Do you have a sign in sheet?
Do you have an ice breaker so everyone can get to know each other?
Are you arriving early for the activity?
> Track the impact on people's lives and in the community.
> Improve your project or event
> Collect information that can be used in talking about your project

The Impact
Many projects are fun and engaging, but what was the impact?
How many older adults were involved?
How many youth were involved?
What were the benefits to the community?
What changes can you measure?
How were lives changed by your project?
What quotes or brief stories can you use to illustrate the project impact?

What does it take?

You are what is most important to making intergenerational projects happen.

You can make a difference in the lives of other people.

That makes you a leader!
It takes you!
You want to make an impact on the lives of the older generation and your community.
Develop a Brand!
A brand tells a story about your project. A brand can include:
a name for your project,
a logo,
a website

A story communicates:

> what you stand for
> what is important to you
> how you want to make a difference in other people’s lives

However you choose to reach out to people, make sure you have a way for people to sign up!
With Twitter you can send tweets and also create hashtags!
With Instagram you can create flyers and post them to your followers.
With Facebook you can create a page for your project and invite all of your friends to like/join! You can even create an event invitation.
Most importantly: Have fun and enjoy getting to know new people!
One of the best parts about doing these projects is being able to share your story with others! Here are some things to think about...
> What have been your struggles and successes? What helped you?
> What impact is your project making in peoples lives or in the community?
> Identify a story of a meaningful moment.
> Ask a question that relates to your project, “have you ever considered..?”
> Focus on what is most important.
> Take any opportunity to practice telling your story.
