Do Now; Take 2 minutes to think about what sustainability is. In doing so:

1. Write down what sustainability means to you.

2. Write down what you think designers can do to design for sustainability.

LO: YWBAT categorize 4 areas in which design can promote sustainability.

Essential Question: At what point is a designer no longer responsible for his or her design?

  • Classwork & Homework: Web search for sustainable products.
  • Reflection on the sustainability of our water purification system.

Four Broad Categories:

1. Eco-design

2. Design for Purpose

3. Design for behavior

4. Systems design

Web Search: In groups of two, go to the computers and find a product that has been sustainably designed using one of the above practices of eco-design.

Placing an emphasis on user needs and motivations throughout the design process.

By creating a product that truly serves its users needs, users will not need to acquire other products that serve the same purpose.

Tonight's HW (reflection - submit via the form on make.nychscl.org): Last week we learned about interviewing for empathy. Today we learned about designing for purpose. Write a paragraph describing how the two are related. Conclude your writing by answer the following: How can the interviewing for empathy process help designers create more sustainable products?

Sustainability Design Challenge: Designing for Sustainability

Design for Purpose

Eco-Design

  • Altering product design to reduce environmental impact.

This can be accomplished by:

1. Materials efficiency - reducing the materials required to create a product.

2. Environmentally-preferred materials - using materials that have a lower impact in their manufacture, use, or disposal.

3. Efficiency in use: products require fewer resources to operate.

Design's Potential Role in Achieving Sustainability

4. Disposal/recycling: "Cradle to grave" design mentality. Products are designed to be easily disassembled for recycling.
