Font Choices (DEVOUR)

Font Choices - What should it be in Horror?

As with the simplicity that is shown in a title choice, contemporary Horror products normally work around a simplistic font which is both eye catching and appealing to the audience.

However, to avoid 'bland branding', many media products use fonts in line with other, stronger and more dynamic, brand elements.

Font Idea 1 - Scorched Earth

We felt that Scorched Earth would be a good font choice for our teaser trailer because it is simplistic, however, with its scratched effect it offered a brand identity that matched contemporary media practice whilst offering something appealing and eye catching.

Font Idea 2 - Broken Detroit

Font Idea 3 - Tahoma

We decided that we wanted to explore very simple fonts, in addition to those we had also seen, to match the identity of our film. Tahoma, although not classically a Horror font, matched the simplistic style of contemporary Horrors. We felt that as a font it offered a lot of scope for use on our products.

We also felt that Broken Detroit would be a good font choice for our teaser trailer because it offered an eclectic mix of both classic Horror fonts, contemporary simplicity as its base layer and our teaser trailers themes.

Font Idea 4 - Self Edited Font (Chosen)

After viewing of all the fonts we decided that none truly delivered what we wanted. Therefore we decided that, with Tahoma as a base font, we would self edit to create the font we envisaged and to create a truly original brand identity. In the end we decided to use this edited font because we felt that it best reflected both the contemporary media practices and the themes within our film, as it is suggestive of eating, dirt and death.
