How can we find motivation within our self?

Thesis: Autonomy and risk taking are the keys to self-motivation; when individuals choose to act on their own ideas, these ideas have a stronger success rate because this choice suggests an innate belief that they have the power to improve them self.

Take Away

  • Long-term & skill-oriented goals promote motivation rather than short-term goals
  • Limited guidelines = more autonomy = more success

Being a Purpose Seeker

"One must find purpose within each task, and perform it in the service of some greater objective, which can achieve even more" (Pink 133).

Sudbury Valley School

"Working from the assumption that all human beings are naturally curious and that the best kind of learning happens when it's initiated and pursued by the one doing the learning, Sudbury Valley school gives its students total control over the task, time, and technique of their learning. Teachers and staff are there to help them make things happen" (Pink 181).

Gever Tulley Article

"As the boundaries of what we determine as the safety zone grow ever smaller, we cut off our children from valuable opportunities to learn how to interact with the world around them. The purpose of this program is to expand children's horizons, with zero instruction, and to see the natural outcome of putting materials in front of a child, telling them there are no boundaries" (Tulley).

Essential Question

To what extent is self-taught motivation the most effective method to achieve success?

Drive by Daniel H. Pink

  • "On average, 60% of students in high school are disengaged during the class and do not have motivation to work" (Forbes)
  • "School programs that try to motivate students by focusing on the goal of excelling on standardized tests prove to be less effective than those that are skill-oriented" (Forbes)
