Shakespearean Play

HAMLET

What is a revenge play?

The plot behind the play is based upon the need to revenge a murder in the family. In Hamlet specifically, it is a typical revenge plot - there is no authority figure for Hamlet to go to (villain has become king and is thus the authority) and so Hamlet must figure this out on his own

Victim: Hamlet Sr.

Villain: Claudius

Avenger: Hamlet

Revenge is something that we all, deep down, understand and respond to imaginatively. The issue engages some of our deepest most powerful feelings, even if the typical revenge plot is seen often.

Early in the play the details become known to Hamlet and he vows to carry out his revenge.

The problem/question that arises with the play is "Why does Hamlet wait so long to carry out his revenge?"

Hamlet is disputed by many historians and literary scholars. So why are we trying to accomplish this in High School?
