Geography

Gediminas Tower is an important icon and historic symbol of the city of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself. It is depicted on the national currency, the Litas, and is mentioned in numerous Lithuanian patriotic poems and folk songs. The Lithuanian flag now flies here permanently and has done since re-independence in 1990.

The rest of the countries terrain features numerous lakes and wetlands combined with a mixed forest zone which covers nearly 33% of the country. This forested area was also used as a filming location in the 2008 film Defiance starring Daniel Craig.

It has around 99 kilometres (61.5 mi) of sandy coastline, some of which forms vast sand dunes, now a registered world heritage site. These dunes have an average height of 35 meters, but some attain the height of 60 meters.

Vilnius Cathedral is the main Roman Catholic Cathedral of Lithuania. It is situated in Vilnius Old Town, in Cathedral Square. During the Soviet control of Lithuania the Cathedral was used a merely a warehouse!

The construction of the Trakai Island Castle begun in the 14th century.

The Teutons were vanquished from it at the Battle of Grunwald (1410) in the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War.

Rebuilt after WW2, now a popular tourist attraction.
