Ideograms
By 1600 B.C., the Phoenicians had developed symbols for spoken sounds
- A symbol that represents a spoken sound
- An example is the Phoenicians symbol for ox, which they called aleph, was used to represent the spoken sound “A” and beth, their symbol for house, represented the sound “B”.
Pictogram
What are pictograms, ideograms and phonograms?
Phonograms
- They were used by various ancient cultures all over the world since around 9000 BC and began to develop into logographic writing systems around 5000 BC.
Ideograms
- An image that stands for a concept or ida.
- The term "ideogram" is commonly used to describe logographic writing systems such as Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese characters.

Examples of ideograms include wayfinding signage, such as in airports and other environments where many people may not be familiar with the language of the place they are in, as well as Arabic numerals and mathematical notation, which are used worldwide regardless of how they are pronounced in different languages.

- It is the basis of cuneiform and hieroglyphs.
