The experiences that someone could go through in Rikers Island are those that should never happen to anyone. So many inmates such as Kalief reached the point where they want to end their suffering by death. To ensure that no one has to go through torture like this.

Thank you!

Nobody is Safe

-Prison guards are also vulnerable to all the attrocities within Rikers island

-There have been incidents where guards have been slashed such as the one depicted below and many have been assaulted by groups of inmates.

-Inmates also seem to have crafty ways to make their assaults more efficient by using nasty methods.

History of Rikers Island

Torture Chambers

Why Close It?

Rikers Island was founded by a Dutch settler named Abraham Ryckers. His family owned the island until it was purchased by the city in 1884 for about $200,000. However, before the purchase of the facility, it was owned by a descent of Abraham, Richard Rickers who was known to abuse the fugitive slave act. This theme of torture and lack if due process is what still burdens the inmates of this facility to this day.

-The prison itself has been a center of corruption

-Throughout its history, the prison has been described as unlivable

-Taxpayer money is being dumped into the facility

-Number of rights groups are trying to shut it down

-Just being in the facility would make any individual more likely to commit a crime
