In Oregon’s Mount Hood National Forest, the Lost Lake has baffled many with its magical yearly transformations. So how can a 85-acre (343,982.8 square metres) lake suddenly become an 85-acre green meadow?

Turns out that the answer is a tunnel created by an ancient lava flow which drains out the water. During the rainy season, the tunnel is unable to drain the water fast enough, meaning the lake-bed remains full. Once the steady fall of rain stops in summer, the tunnel is able to drain the lake and it ‘disappears.

No one knows for sure where the water goes, but experts believe it seeps through the volcanic rock below and into the groundwater supply. Lava tubes and tunnels are common in Oregon due to the Cascade Mountain Range – tall mountains and old volcanoes throughout the state.
