Stereotypes in Disney Movies

Tangled

Rapunzel is rebellious, courageous, lovable, and ignorant to the rest of the world.

Flynn Rider

Unlike the other princes, Flynn Rider didn't fall for Rapunzel when they first met. He's not charming like the others were.

Flynn Rider wasn't born into royalty and was just an ordinary guy. Rapunzel saves Flynn Rider from dying with her tears.

Beauty and the Beast

Belle is not like the typical girl, she is deep, intelligent, stubborn, and is viewed strangely among the townspeople because she loves to read.

Cinderella

The Beast

Belle chooses the beast instead of the handsome Gaston, the towns most desirable man.

This shows that she isn't superficial and she doesn't just care about physical traits.

In the end, Belle ends up saving the prince by reversing the curse.

Cinderella is shy, romantic, and and hopeful that someday her prince will come.

The Prince

The prince fell in love with Cinderella because she was beautiful and graceful.

The prince saves Cinderella by marrying her and taking her away from her evil stepmother and sisters.

Snow White

Snow White is very kind, gentle, sweet, innocent, cheerful, and is the motherly type.

The Prince

The prince instantly fell in love when he saw Snow White.

Snow White acts like the typical damsel in distress and in the end the prince awakens her with a kiss.

In most cases, Disney movies have three main archetypes: the damsel in distress, prince charming, and the villain. The villain always seems to be an older woman.

Sleeping Beauty

Aurora is kind, gentle, graceful, and charming.

The Prince

We found at the articles "About Men" and "Mind Over Muscle" connected the gender stereotypes in Disney movies. In "Mind Over Muscle" it claims that women are becoming superior. For example, in the movie Tangled Rapunzel was the savior instead of the guy.

In "About Men" the author claims that the media portrays men as the heroic type and this can be seen in older Disney movies.

The prince was attracted to Sleeping Beauty's beauty and her singing.

Ever since she was small, Aurora was thought of as fragile and she had to be protected. When the prince finds out what Maleficent did to Aurora he goes after her and kills her in order to keep her protected.
