Infants use these single words primarily to obtain things they want or need, but sometimes they aren't that obvious.

E.g. a baby may cry and say ''mama'' purely when it wants attention.

An infant normally develops this stage when they are about 9-18 months.

In this stage of the infants vocabulary, nouns make up 50% verbs and modifiers make up 30% and questions and negatives make up the rest.

The Holophrastic

Stage

The stage of child language development characterized by the use of single-word utterances.

Child Language Acquisition

Infants often use words in ways that are too narrow or too broad.

It has been suggested that the number of holophrastic words a child can say depends on the parents.

The word choices and phrases that are used by the child come from the parents' language, therefore it is crucial that a child interacts daily with their parents during language development.

E.g. the word ''dog'' is normally used for any four legged animal such as cats, lambs and cows as well as dogs.
