Why? What's the purpose?

Before people used cormorant fishing because they needed to get fish for food. Now days, people in japan do cormorant fishing for tourism.

Is it environmentally-friendly?

How old is cormorant fishing?

In Japan cormorant fishing was used for about 1,300 years.

It doesn't make the river polluted because the japanese people use wooden boats without petrol and machines, but they catch and make the bird work, so some people say it is animal cruelty.

How?

Facts:

What is cormorant fishing?

One person has about five to ten cormorants, and they tie like a leash around the bird's neck and hold onto all of the leashes. If one cormorant gets a fish, then the bird will not be able to swallow it because of the leash. When the owner sees one has a fish, he will pull in the bird, take the fish and put it in a basket.

The cormorants in Japan can only catch one type of fish called Ayu. Ayu is also called the sweetfish because when caught fresh, smells sweet.

When they fish, the owners put a fire near the boat so the fish scales shine, making them easier to catch.

Cormorant fishing is when people use cormorant birds to fish for them.

Who? Where?

Cormorant fishing is used in Kyoto, Japan. The people there use cormorant birds to get fish for them. In Japan, cormorant fishing is called Ukai (oo-ka-yi), which means Cormorant-trainer/owner.
