Whats a crossbow made of?
The Ancient Chinese did not just use the simple crossbow, they used a whole range of them. The most common crossbow was 'normal' crossbow. This was a simple crossbow that had to be reloaded after every shot but could shoot 200 metres. But, the Chinese saw that problem and invented the repeating crossbow. This descendant of the crossbow does not to be reloaded often these had a mechanical trigger so it did not tire the crossbowman. The Chinese also invented massive catapult-like crossbows that could fire for miles. They also later invented a crossbow that fired multiple arrows at once.
The Ancient Chinese crossbows were made up of many components that are made of precious metals and usually contained some bronze. The crossbow itself was made of solid metals with a bronze firing mechanism while the bolt heads were made of bronze. Together these metals created lethal crossbows that could pierce several layers of iron armour.

Even though the crossbow was the tool of the trade back in it's day, it is not largely used around the today. Some people use compound crossbows for hunting animals and to shoot targets for fun but it is not used in the warfare sector anymore.
The lethal weapon of the crossbow was first used by the Chinese around 2500 years ago during the warring states period near the Hunan Provence were it was used for military purposes. Even then some repeating crossbows have been dated back to the 4th century BCE! Repeating crossbows have been also found in the Terracotta army burial sites. Some Chinese soldiers were trained to shoot behind themselves while on horseback.
