The masthead of this magazine is big and bold in a modern font. It follows common conventions of magazines as it is stretched across the full page and is the biggest text on the page to allow it to stand out the most so the target audience is able to notice it. The main image covers some of the text which indicates the masthead doesn't have to be fully visible because of how popular and big the magazine is, meaning that everyone already knows what the magazine is even without seeing all the title. The word 'new' acts as a tag on the V of the masthead. This obviously indicates that it is a new issue, helping attract the target audience because the masthead is the first thing most audiences notice on a magazine, so by seeing that notification, they will instantly know the magazine is up to date and reliable.
The left third of the magazine cover is essential for the magazine to get sales. This is because some shops have a lot of magazines overlapping each other and only showing the left third, so this third needs to be noticeable and appealing to the target audience, showing lots of and attracting cover lines in a display of dozens of competitors. The start of the masthead is important here too as it needs to be big to attract the target audience. If it wasn’t, other competitors would take advantage as they would be more noticeable and get more sales. This third is where the majority of sales will come from as the audience may not always see the full page so it needs to be attractive
The masthead is covered by the main image and this is often done on this magazine series. This is because the masthead has become so recognizable to its audience that there is no need to change it and show the full name as the audience already know what they’re looking for so it allows them to relate to the masthead because they already know what they are looking for.
The main image is a rap artist called Drake. It follows convention of magazines by covering the entire page, allowing it to take center of attention when looking at the magazine, helping instantly attract the target audience as they will see the image and know this magazine is about rap as the character is associated with the genre. On the characters shirt reads the word 'Unstoppable'. This attracts the target audience because when they see this image, they will feel intrigued as to why he in particular is wearing that t shirt and want to read the article to see if it is explained. They may also feel that if they read the article/magazine they too can become unstoppable.
The singular large image covers the majority of the page follows common conventions of a magazine as it is normal for the magazine to have one main image, receiving the most attention, and also helping attract the target audience as it is related to the magazine genre, allowing the target audience, instantly know the magazine is a reliable one and everything is in place. The main image is Justin Bieber who is a very popular music artist, this will help attract the target audience due to his popularity, there is a high chance that a lot of people interested in music want to read something about him as he is a controversial character so the image will help attract the target audience. The colour scheme of this front cover is yellow, black and white, showing a classic yet modern feel, which are somewhat binary opposites. These colours look very clean when combined with the font used, allowing a very smart and professional look to be achieved. The colour scheme also fits in with the mise en scene as his clothes are black and white along with his necklaces. These also contribute to achieving the professional look as it looks like the front cover fits together perfectly and that nothings out of place, helping attract the target audience as they will feel the magazine is reliable and worthy of buying.
The masthead is found on the
left third and is very big and clear to see,
making it easier for the target audience to notice. The positioning of it helps target audiences see it better on the shelf because when they're stacked it is common that only the left third is visible, so it is always on show so people cant miss it, allowing it to receive more publicity.
The colour scheme of this magazine, is black and white. The reason for this is to represent a classic look, but i also think it is to fit in with the mise en scene of the image as it involves Dr Dre who is black and also a chess board. Black and white fit are the colours of chess and also helps represent Dr Dre as black is on show as well as white, helping represent equality of black and white ethnicity. Apart from black and white, red is also used but very slightly, it is used on the logo of the magazine which stands out massively against the black and white colour scheme, allowing the target audience to notice this particular magazine easier. It is also used on the 'plus' on the right hand side. This is used to attract the target audience to this extra in the magazine and highlight it to make sure it stands out from the rest, while still looking professional. It helps the extra stand out more, showing the target audience this magazine has something competitors doesn't making the target audience choose this over other magazines.
As commonly found on magazines, the main image covers the full front cover, meaning this magazine follows common conventions of a magazine. The image consists of Dr Dre, a well known rapper, due to his music and his products, holding chess pieces. The image goes against common rapper stereotypes as it shows he is quite sophisticated, which isn't thought about rappers. The rapper possesses direct mode of address, looking directly at the reader. This allows the audience to create a better relationship with the character and gain a better knowledge of his emotions as his full face is displayed. This helps attract the target audience as they are able to feel something similar to what they are due to the relationship created, helping persuade the individual to what to gain further knowledge by reading the article.
