Bodhi Tree aka Fig Tree

- The Buddha meditated without moving from his seat for seven days under this tree.

- A shrine, called Animisalocana cetiya, was created where the Buddha sat.

- King Ashoka payed homage to the tree regularly.

- The Bodhi Tree still exists today, yet it is very decayed.

- One branch to the west is still green, but the rest are rotten and falling apart.

- In 1876 the tree was destroyed by a storm but was replanted on the same spot in 1881.

Celebration

- On December 8 Bodhi Day is celebrated in honor of Buddhas enlightenment underneath the tree

- Those who follow Dharma Greet each other by saying “Budu saranai!”

HISTORY

- Grows at Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya

- Original specimen planted here in 288 BC

- Guatama Buddha attained enlightenment here while meditating under it.

-This tree is a destination for pilgrims.

- Its the most important of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
