Police Communications

Relating to the Society that you Protect

BUT HOW?

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

Try to recollect the moments in your life when you had an enjoyable conversation and what made it so. Bring those skills and that awareness with you.

Acquire the ability of bringing up common interests, initiate a conversation by determining an artificial time constraint, add high regard for works and relations, listen intently, use facial expressions that cue interest, repeat the last sentence of what someone said to imply interest, and cue a need for further explanation.

  • Ask “how, why, and when” -type questions
  • Validate ideas of the individual
  • Speak slowly and non-threateningly
  • Focus on the other person and their benefit in the conversation
  • Give nonverbal accommodations such as “smiling and using a slight head tilt”

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

WHAT ARE THE BASIC ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION?

Interpersonal communication involves understanding the dynamics of sending and receiving verbal and nonverbal messages.

Whether officers realize it or not, their ability to relate to others directly affects every action they perform on duty. This includes not only what the officers say but also the way they say it:

Tone of voice, facial expressions, posture, and general demeanor broadcast messages to those with whom we interact. Often, these nonverbal elements send stronger messages to the listener than verbal ones.

  • Paralanguage - Tone of voice, pitch, and inflection
  • Hearing versus listening - focus on their story, not on yours
  • Kinesics - Facial expressions, gestures, posture; these and other body movements transmit messages that either reinforce or contradict the spoken message
  • Proxemics - Personal and social space
  • Cultural considerations - Understand the crowd that you are speaking to

WHAT OTHER EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO RELATE TO A TECHNOLOGICAL SOCIETY?

THESIS:

In modern-day America, most communication is based in or relating to technology. Because of this, it is more crucial than ever that the Police have close ties to and compelling communication tactics with the society at hand in order to protect the people and keep order where it matters most.

  • The new medium of the web browser, with its “cookies” technology, was specifically designed to automate the collection of personal information (Elmer, 2004), and new Internet tracking companies like DoubleClick and Bluestreak devised ways to turn our online activities into valuable market research data, effectively redefining privacy as a tradable commodity

Corporate mergers have granted companies unprecedented abilities to use this technology to penetrate the domestic sphere in order to digitally record the actions of audience members as they surf, screen, and shop.
