  • A person's organizational role.
  • Formal or Official Authority.
  • Some people are able to make things happen because they have the power or authority to do so.

Referent Power

The potential influence one has due to the strength of the relationship between the leader and the followers.

This person may not have a fancy title,

but they have followers based on their character, convictions or behaviors.

Coercive Power

The opposite of reward power, it is the potential to influence others through the administration of negative sanctions or the removal of positive events.

Blackmail is always the perfect example of this.

Reward Power

The potential to influence others due to one's control over something the other desires. (Raises, special assignments, etc.)
