El Cid Campeador

Their tomb

Spanish National Hero

El Cid had asked that his wife and famous steed be buried with him at the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña. But their remains were removed to the cathedral in Burgos where they were finally interred and where they currently rest today.

The most rich source with the facts of his life is an epic poem “Cantar de mio Cid” written by the unknown author.

Why do we know him?

Who is he?

His real name is Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. He was a Castilian nobleman, military leader, and diplomat. Some of his the most popular achievements are the capture of Valencia and participating in Reconquista.

Born a member of the minor nobility, Díaz was brought up at the court of Ferdinand I in the household of the king's eldest son, Sancho. When Sancho succeeded Ferdinand as King Sancho II in 1065, he appointed El Cid as commander of the royal troops and standard-bearer.

At the court

Valencia´s siege

In October 1092 El Cid began a siege of Valencia and later was ruling it with his wife Ximena until Valencia was captured by Masladi on May 5, 1102 and it did not become a Christian city again for over 125 years.
